Protein Powerhouse for Vegetarian Diet – Panch Dal Recipe

With the world moving towards following Vegetarianism, there are times when it becomes difficult to make a Vegetarian Diet nutritionally rich. One of such Macro Nutrient is Protein.

There is no such foods in the Vegetarian Diet that provides you complete Proteins. In such cases the quality of Proteins can be improved by using a combination of different sources.

Dals form a base of a  Vegetarian Diet. Apart from being a good quality of Proteins, they are also low in Fats, rich in Fibers and are a good source of Vitamins and Minerals.


The below recipe shall help you create the perfect Panch Dal.

Panch Dal (Serves 8)


  • 50 Gram Masoor Dal (Red Lentils)
  • 100 Gram Green Masoor
  • 50 Gram Yellow Moong Dal
  • 50 Gram Chana Dal (Split Bengal Gram)
  • 50 Gram Urad Dal
  • 1 Table Spoon Ginger
  • 2 Tea Spoon Oil
  • 3 Medium Garlic Clove
  • 1/4 Tea Spoon Haldi Powder (Turmeric)
  • 1/2 Tea Spoon Amchur (Raw Mango Powder)
  • 1 1/2 Tea Spoon Salt
  • 1 Medium Onion sliced
  • 2 Medium Tomato chopped
  • 3 Table Spoon Coriander finely chopped
  • 2 Piece Green Chillies

  1. Wash and soak the lentil for atleast 20 minutes.
  2. Pressure cook for 3 whistle approx.
  3. In a separate frying pan – heat oil and add the onions.
  4. Saute till golden brown, add garlic and saute for a few minutes.
  5. Add the tomatoes and cook till soft then add the green chillies and dry masalas -amchur (mango powder), salt and if you want some ground cumin.
  6. Also add half the coriander at this time it gives very good aroma
  7. After the lentils are cooked add this tadka to it and cook for about 10-15 minutes till all is mixed well.
