Dalia (Broken Wheat) Khichdi

Rice is the staple food of the Indian diet. It is one of those foods which has to be avoided if one is on a weight loss diet plan. Rice is avoided as it is high in Glycaemic index and can affect the sugar/insulin levels leading to spikes. It is rich in starch making it not very favourable to be included in the Weight loss diet plan.

Dalia is considered to be a healthy alternative to rice. Dalia is broken wheat. Dalia has many health benefits, It is a good source of fibre. Along with fibres, it’s a good source of Vit B1 and Vit B2. Dalia takes time to get digested, is slowly absorbed making it a diabetic friendly food. The taste of-course is different from rice, but when cooked can resemble rice to a certain level. It can be included in the weight loss diet plan instead of rice.

Dalia (Broken Wheat) Khichdi (Serves 3)

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 Cup Dalia (Broken Wheat)
  • 1 Tea Spoon Oil
  • 1/4 Tea Spoon Rai Seeds (Mustard)
  • 1 Table Spoon Ginger Garlic Paste
  • 1/2 Cup Onion finely chopped
  • 1 Tea Spoon Green Chillies finely chopped
  • 1 1/2 Cup Mix Vegetable chopped
  • 1/2 Tea Spoon Haldi Powder (Turmeric)
  • 1 Tea Spoon Chilli Powder
    *Add to taste: Salt, Pepper

Recipe: 

  1. Clean and wash the broken wheat thoroughly in enough water. Drain and keep aside.
  2. Heat the oil in a pressure cooker and add the mustard seeds.
  3. When the seeds crackle, add the ginger-garlic paste, onions, green chillies, mixed vegetables, broken wheat, turmeric powder, chilli powder, salt and 2 ½ cups of hot water, mix well and put in a pressure cooker to cook on a high flame for 2 whistles.
  4. Allow the steam to escape using quick release method before opening the lid.
  5. Serve hot garnished with coriander.
